As a childbirth educator/doula why is it important to be aware of sensory perception of the child in utero when using music? How is the child in utero processing the sound he is hearing? What considerations should we be aware of when using music when working with mothers and babies in utero?
Because the child in the uterus can hear the sound f the music. The chose music's melody, tone and the emotions will influence the baby. Human's life begins at fertilization, the babies in the womb have several perceptions, what they heard and felt will become their memory which will impact on their physical body lifelong.
ReplyDeleteYes exactly. Babies perceive sound beginning at 12 weeks gestation. But before that their mothers experience sound and their emotional reactions to sound are experienced by baby.

ReplyDeleteIn order to achieve and improve communication with the unborn baby, first,we need to considerate the conduction of musical vibrations from the source to the baby, and the way in which the baby receives those vibrations, it means the quality of the sound; second, the hearing capabilities of the unborn baby(their auditory development: whether they are able or not to hear certain music); the way in which their auditory system receives the sound signals and transmit that information to their brain; and finally we must consider everything which the mother transmits to her baby on an emotional level, through the hormonal system, when she listen to the music.
Yes! We should be aware of the intensity level (loudness) and the emotional content of the music as well. Also music should have words of love to help baby feel safe. Music that is loud or has sudden changes is not good for baby.

ReplyDeleteBabies in the womb react to the diverse sound stimuli they perceive. If there is a violent noise, the baby will be startled, just the same as adult, and experience various sensations. The baby receives the information from the outside world via three pathways: the sensitive, the auditory and the hormonal. The sensitive pathway enables them to feel the sound vibrations in their bodies. Lower-pitched sounds are those which are generally felt with more intensity. The auditory pathway captures higher-pitched sounds: those which pass more directly through the abdominal wall and which the baby can hear better because they activate the ossicular chain of the auditory system and send the information to the brain. The third pathway, the hormonal one, leaves an emotional impression on the baby. It is through this pathway that the sensations experienced by the mother when listening to a particular sound are transmitted to her child.
For example, if certain music causes a pleasant sensation for the mother, the baby can perceive the same sensation.
Yes exactly. When we provide musical stimulation for babies in the womb we must remember all of these things.
